If you knew that your present methods to land that dream job aren’t working, would you keep following them in the hope that they might reap results some day? For some, the answer to this question might be no. However, for a large section of job seekers, this is what they’re doing day-in and day-out of their search for a dream job. All of them are submitting the same old-fashioned resumes and cover letters, with no response at all. They’re attending the same job fairs year after year and not getting any replies. It is high time that you stop this foolishness and get down to some serious work regarding your dream job.
Ideally you shouldn’t wait for the human resource executives to get back to you after you send out your resume. You must learn to be proactive and give them a call to find out if they received your resume in order. After speaking to them, you must schedule a time four or five business days later to make a follow-up call. Continue being persistent without sounding too disparate.
A large number of job seekers simply send out an e-mail and wait till eternity in hope that they will receive an e-mail back in response. This is not a good approach. You should refrain from e-mailing resumes without personally meeting the people involved behind the job postings. You don’t get hired by computers, do you? So, the idea of sending out hundreds of resumes all day long to a multitude of e-mail addresses and then expecting a job to land in your lap is nothing but nonsense. A computer is a good instrument to find out about various job postings, but in the end it will be a human who will interview and highly. Pick up the phone and talk to that human about your dream job.
You must also focus on building a network of resourceful friends. Such network can be a great help in getting called for your dream job interview. Spend at least a couple of hours every day inviting your network of friends over a coffee.
You should approach the task of finding a dream job as a job itself and aim for efficiency in your work. Do not use just one draft of cover letter and resume over and over again. Be creative and draft different versions of your cover letter and resume. Try out different methods and figure out what’s working and what’s not. For instance if you are sending out 10 copies of your resumes, with five having your website address on them and five not, and the five copies with website address receive responses while others do not, you know what’s working and what’s not.
People nowadays tend to neglect the human element in their dream job search and sit all day on the computer in the hope of landing one. It’s time you understand the importance of socializing in your job search.
