Usually, the ways that most people go about finding a job are the least successful. There are many ways for a person to find
a job and most people use the conventional methods such as classifieds, job fairs, and sending out resumes to prospective
employers. These methods don’t work for the vast majority of people and most people need an alternative method.
A person has to expend some energy to find a job. One of the best ways to find the perfect job is by networking. When you
need to find a job, this method takes some energy and time, but frequently the effort will be rewarded. Networking can be
done with your neighbors, friends, family, and former coworkers.
In order to find new job prospects, you should increase your network beyond that of your current contacts. It is necessary
for you to find methods to connect with others in your type of work. To connect with these people, most cities have numerous
job networking groups that you can join and participate in. You should consider job finding clubs, service organizations,
toastmasters, and local book clubs that you have an interest in.
Networking means receiving and giving. The key is to meeting and get to know new people. Help them when you can by
determining their needs through talking and listening to them. You will probably find others who are willing to help you if
you help them. If you need a job, you might just find that a prospective employer who calls you for an interview ahead of
other prospective employees. The assistance that you provide to others will eventually come back to you.
As a result of the personal relationships that you will build, networking is more powerful than other job seeking methods.
Classified advertisements and mailing out resumes are too impersonal. Although a job fair may be personal there is no
relationship building.
The person who gets all these jobs that weren’t advertised is the person who has all of the right connections get the job by
networking effectively. However, even when you network effectively you will still need good credentials and the best resume
that you can put together. This is true regardless if you use conventional method to find a job or you network. Since you
never know when you might need a new job, you should always network to meet new people.
